The physiology of transformation - how movement and dance create change

Transformation: the act or state or process of changing

Movement changes things.

It is now clear that there is a science behind the benefits of movement and dance and that our brain changes as we move ourselves.

Movement is medicine for me and always has been. Thinking about movement and transformation made me reflect upon Kahlil Gibran’s poem “On Children”:

Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of life’s longing for itself. They come through you but not from you, And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts, For they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls, For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams...

What if we approached this poem not only as an instruction on how to raise or consider our children, my children and yours, but instead on how to lead our own lives, my life and yours.

What if these were our words to speak to our parents, teachers, ancestors and politicians.

I am the living arrow as are you, I am life’s longing for itself, my soul dwells in the house of tomorrow as does yours.

I am here to move, to move forward, to change and transform.

Movement is inherent in life, being propelled, called forth and allowing change seems fundamental to the process of life.

Movement, exercise, posture and creativity all affect and change the brain. We have enough scientific research to allow me to make this statement. The brain is altered by what it experiences.

Combining movement, exercise posture and creativity changes brain activity, and impacts body biochemistry, neuropeptides, neurophysiology, hormones and immune system function.

Changing our neurophysiology changes both our psycho-emotional and physical state. We can experience and remember new possibilities and connect with a variety of emotional states.

If you can connect with and change your state, and change it for a more life-enhancing state and change it often enough, then you can change your day, your energy levels, immune function, emotional tone, perceptions and sense of the world around you.

Change your state one day after another and you are changing your life and probably the lives of others around you as well.

Find your favourite music, put on a few favourite songs and move, dance ... yes, as if no one is watching, invite your family to join you and see what happens! Enjoy.
